The largest settlement in Ayrshire, Ayr has a population of around 46,000 people. A castle was built on the River Ayr but Ayr wasn't given bugh status until 1205. Ayr became home to the Friars in the 13th century, instead of withdrawing they liked to preach. Ayr was still a busy port even through the 16th and 17th century. The industrial revolution transformed the area in the 19th century. In the late nineteenth century there have been many improvements to the beach area to help the tourist industry.
Thanks to the updates to the beach area it is a popular tourist attraction. Coupled with the beautiful beaches and sand there are plenty entertainment venues. Low green, a sea wall and ice cream huts make the area complete. There are bathing areas and of course lavatory accommodations for visitors to the beaches.
Ayr is also home to a famous football club. The Honest Men, named for some of the famous people that were born and raised in the area. Visitors to the area can enjoy taking in a game while you are in the area.
Ayr is also home to Scotland's premier horse racing track the Ayr Racecourse. The Ayr Racecourse offers more racing days than other courses in Scotland. It is also home to the Ayr Gold Cup and Scottish Grand National.
There are also many of the best public golf courses in all of Scotland. The three best courses are Belleisle, Seafield, and Dalmilling. Belleisle Is considered the best public course in the UK while Seafield offers golfers classic combination of links and parkland course. Dalmilling is located between the racecourse and the A77 and is open parkland. Golfers will have their choice of challenging courses.
Located just north of the town of Ayr is the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. The museum was set to open on the 250th anniversary of his birth. The museum, which is set in the home he was born in. It will mark the life, work and contribution to Scottish culture. It is considered to be the most significant Burns collection displayed in the UK. The museum will be set in a commemorative garden that is supposed to be a fitting tribute to the life of the Bard.
For nature lovers the Ayr Flower Show is a beautiful way to spend the day. Held annually near the Burns Museum at Rozelle Estate it is Ayr's answer to the Chelsea Flower Show. Red Roses are the main attraction at the show. There are trees, woodland walks, and ponds for visitors to enjoy along with beautiful flowers.
